The Kampala City Hall Court has ordered the detention of four men pending further investigation into the death of Sydney Gyabi Gongodyo, a prominent player for the Uganda Rugby Cranes. The accused, Obed Mugwisa, Elly Mondoni, Joseph Owino, and Henry Kabugo, were presented before Senior Grade One Magistrate Edgar Karakire on Friday.
They have been formally charged with murder, an offense allegedly committed on June 5, 2026, on Upper Naguru East Road in Kampala. As murder is a capital offense, the court did not accept pleas from the defendants, as jurisdiction for such cases lies solely with the High Court.
Prosecution informed the court that investigations are ongoing, with police actively seeking other individuals believed to be involved in Gongodyo’s death. The case was adjourned until June 23 for mention, allowing investigators time to complete their inquiries and potentially make further arrests.
According to preliminary findings from Kira Road Police Station, Gongodyo was allegedly a victim of mob justice. He was rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital after sustaining injuries in an assault, where he was later pronounced dead. Reports suggest the incident occurred after he was accused of snatching a woman’s handbag.
Obed Mugwisa, identified as a prime suspect, reportedly led investigators to a local laundry where he had taken the yellow T-shirt he was allegedly wearing during the incident. This garment has been collected as evidence. While ten people were initially arrested, only these four have been formally charged and remanded.
