Four men have been brought before the City Hall Court in Kampala and charged with the murder of Sydney Gongodyo Gyabi, a prominent forward for the Rugby Cranes and Stanbic Black Pirates Rugby Club. The accused, identified as boda boda riders Obed Mugwisa and Henry Kabugo, delivery agent Elly Mondoni, and private security guard Joseph Owino, were informed of the capital offense but could not enter a plea.
Grade One Magistrate Edgar Karakire remanded the suspects to Luzira Prison, stating the court lacks jurisdiction over murder charges. They are scheduled to reappear on June 23 as investigations continue.
Prosecution informed the court that police are actively pursuing other individuals believed to be involved in Gongodyo’s death. The charge sheet alleges that the accused, along with others still at large, murdered Gongodyo on June 5 along Upper Naguru East Road in Kampala with malice aforethought.
Preliminary police findings suggest Gongodyo, 27, was attacked by a mob after being falsely accused of stealing a handbag in the Bukoto area. He was rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital but tragically passed away due to his injuries.
His death has deeply affected Uganda’s rugby community, leading to the postponement of crucial league matches and prompting an outpouring of grief from officials like Uganda Rugby Union President Godwin Kayangwe, who called it a “monumental loss.” The incident also highlights ongoing concerns about mob justice in Uganda, where vigilante attacks, sometimes resulting in the death of the accused before proper investigation, remain a serious issue. Police continue to warn against such actions, noting they can lead to the targeting of innocent individuals and can be exploited for criminal purposes.
