Former South Korean President Yoon Gets 30 Years for Border Provocation
A South Korean court has sentenced former President Yoon Suk Yeol to an additional 30 years in prison for orchestrating a drone operation into North Korea. Prosecutors alleged the move was intended to provoke Pyongyang and serve as a pretext for his earlier, failed martial law declaration. Yoon is already serving a life sentence for insurrection related to the martial law attempt. Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has received a new 30-year prison sentence for his role in sending drones into North Korea. The Seoul District Court found Yoon guilty of treason and abuse of power, ruling that he orchestrated the drone operation in October 2024.
Prosecutors successfully argued that the operation was designed to provoke Pyongyang, creating a pretext for Yoon’s unsuccessful bid to declare martial law later that year. The court stated that the defendants used “the guise of a military operation to induce provocations from North Korea with the aim of creating a state of emergency.”
This sentence adds to Yoon’s existing life sentence for insurrection, handed down after his attempted martial law declaration on December 3, 2024. He had claimed the move was to protect the nation from “anti-state” sympathizers of North Korea, but it was met with mass protests and quickly rescinded. Yoon was subsequently impeached.
Also convicted were former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, sentenced to 30 years, and former head of the Defense Counterintelligence Command Yeo In-hyung, who received 15 years. The former head of Drone Operations Command, Kim Yong-dae, received a three-year sentence with a five-year suspension.
The court determined that Yoon bore the “greatest responsibility” for provoking North Korea, thereby “increasing the risk of a military conflict.” Yoon’s defense team had contended his actions were a “legitimate” response to North Korea’s “rubbish balloon” provocations, referring to North Korean balloons that dropped waste into the South earlier in 2024.
Tensions had escalated in 2024 after North Korea accused South Korea of flying drones over Pyongyang, allegedly scattering propaganda leaflets. The court found that Yoon expected this drone operation to elicit a response from the North.
