Five Candidates Cleared for Kalangala Woman MP By-Election Race

The Electoral Commission (EC) has cleared five candidates to vie for the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament seat, following the passing of the previous MP. The by-election is set to be a closely contested race, with the ruling NRM party aiming to maintain its dominance against strong opposition from NUP and independent contenders. The race to fill the vacant Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament seat has officially begun, with the Electoral Commission (EC) clearing five candidates after a two-day nomination period. The seat became available with the unfortunate passing of the late MP Hellen Nakimuli in April. Political observers anticipate a vigorous contest between the National Resistance Movement (NRM), the National Unity Platform (NUP), and several independent candidates.

The nominated candidates include Aidah Nabayiga for the NRM, Irene Nampala for the NUP, and independents Babirye Sharifa Kaala, Agnes Nasuuna, and Helen Flavia Nagawa. Notably, Ms. Kaala, who is perceived as NUP-leaning, opted to run as an independent after the NUP ticket went to Ms. Nampala. Similarly, Ms. Nagawa is an NRM-leaning independent candidate who entered the race after losing in the NRM primaries.

Candidates have outlined distinct campaign platforms. Ms. Nabayiga (NRM) has pledged to advocate for the upgrading of the Kalangala Health Centre IV to a district hospital. Ms. Nampala (NUP), sister of the deceased MP, aims to continue her sibling’s legacy by focusing on fisheries regulations, healthcare, and women’s empowerment. Ms. Nagawa (Independent) is concentrating on improving infrastructure and supporting marginalized groups, including the “boy child” and silverfish fishermen.

Ms. Kaala (Independent) stated that consultations with residents motivated her to contest, with a focus on revitalizing the district’s tourism and fishing sectors. The Electoral Commission has issued stern warnings against electoral violence, emphasizing the need for a peaceful process as the official campaign period runs from June 12 to June 22, ahead of polling day on June 24.

The NRM has expressed confidence, citing their existing control over district leadership, including the President, two MPs, and the district chairperson. Conversely, NUP officials maintain that their candidate, Irene Nampala, was chosen based on local demand and data. The EC has assured the public that measures are in place to ensure a secure election across the islands.
