The Ebola virus has made its way into Kpangba, a displacement camp in eastern Congo, with two confirmed deaths among its inhabitants. The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, reported the deaths, highlighting the extreme vulnerability of the camp, which is home to approximately 30,000 internally displaced people.

Aid workers are expressing significant alarm over the potential for swift and widespread transmission of the virus within the camp’s cramped conditions. The victims, a mother and her daughter, died on May 31 and June 1, respectively, with the World Health Organization confirming Ebola after their deaths. The close living quarters, often featuring tarp walls for shelter, make isolation of symptomatic individuals nearly impossible, exacerbating the risk.

Conditions at many displacement camps in the Ituri, South Kivu, and North Kivu provinces are dire, characterized by poor hygiene and severely limited sanitation facilities. Reports indicate that hundreds of people may share a single toilet, with open defecation also being a concern.

Caitlin Brady, interim country director for the Danish Refugee Council in Congo, voiced the widespread anxiety: “We are all really worried that Ebola in these camps will spread extremely quickly and that there will be panic and people will flee all over whether or not they’re contacts, whether or not they’re ill.” This fear is compounded by the fact that the outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which no approved treatment or vaccine currently exists.

As of Friday, the Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded 676 confirmed cases and 136 deaths. The outbreak has also spread to neighboring Uganda, which has reported 19 cases. The virus went undetected for several weeks, leaving first responders in a continuous effort to catch up.
