Uzbekistan’s national football team is set to make its debut on the world stage after securing a historic qualification for the FIFA World Cup. This achievement marks a significant moment for the Central Asian nation, which gained independence 35 years ago.

The team’s success is a testament to a sustained, government-backed strategy aimed at elevating football within the country. This strategy has included widespread investment in infrastructure, from the construction of numerous mini-pitches to the renovation of some 15,000 school grounds.

Furthermore, a robust network of specialized football schools has been established, nurturing the talent of over 65,000 young players. The development of prominent athletes has been a key outcome, with Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov emerging as a globally recognized figure and a symbol of Uzbekistan’s growing football prowess.

Otabek Umarov, first vice president of Uzbekistan’s Olympic committee, highlighted the unifying impact of this achievement. “This achievement unites 38 million people in shared pride and joy,” he stated, emphasizing that this is the first time a Central Asian nation will participate in the World Cup.

Under the guidance of World Cup-winning coach Fabio Cannavaro, Uzbekistan is poised to compete against formidable opponents such as Colombia, DR Congo, and Portugal. Umarov expressed confidence that this World Cup experience will serve as a powerful catalyst for further growth in sports, inspiring millions of young people across the region and beyond to embrace active lifestyles.

“Every Uzbekistani som spent has been part of a coherent, long-term strategy, and the results speak for themselves,” Umarov added, pointing to the team’s participation in the World Cup and a 13th-place finish at the Paris 2024 Olympics as evidence of the strategy’s effectiveness.
