The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is joining forces with the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) in a significant conservation push for Kidepo Valley National Park. This new partnership, recently endorsed by the UWA Board of Trustees, aims to bolster the management and protection of this ecologically vital region in northeastern Uganda.
The AWF has committed to investing up to Shs78.8 billion (approximately $21 million) over the next decade. This substantial funding will be crucial for enhancing conservation management within Kidepo Valley National Park, a landscape renowned for its rugged savannahs and unique biodiversity.
While the specifics of the joint management plan are still being detailed, the UWA has expressed readiness to collaborate closely with the AWF. The partnership is expected to extend beyond the park’s boundaries, encompassing the Karenga Community Wildlife Management Area and other critical biodiversity sites within the Kidepo Valley Conservation Landscape.
AWF brings a wealth of experience in conservation financing, park planning, and community-focused conservation strategies. The foundation has a history of successful projects in Uganda, including anti-poaching initiatives, human-wildlife conflict mitigation, and conservation education.
A special purpose vehicle (SPV) is planned to ensure transparent financial management and efficient implementation of the collaborative management plan. UWA has committed to a long-term co-management agreement, subject to Attorney General approval.
This collaboration signifies a shared vision to transform the Kidepo Valley Conservation Landscape into a resilient ecosystem that not only conserves wildlife but also contributes to Uganda’s socio-economic development and the livelihoods of local communities. The initial disbursement of Shs3.8 billion is anticipated upon agreement signing, with the remainder phased over ten years.
