Drivers increasingly rely on 360-degree camera systems for enhanced situational awareness and easier parking. However, it’s not uncommon to encounter distorted images, which can be a source of confusion and concern. Fortunately, many of these distortions can be attributed to understandable reasons.
One common cause is the inherent nature of wide-angle lenses, which are necessary to capture such a broad field of view. These lenses, especially fisheye types, naturally bend straight lines, making them appear curved. This “barrel distortion” is a characteristic of the technology and is often present even in well-functioning systems.
Environmental conditions also play a significant role. Direct sunlight or bright headlights can overwhelm the camera’s sensor, leading to “blooming” or “blown-out” areas where details are lost. Conversely, low-light conditions can result in grainy images with reduced clarity. Reflections from wet roads, shiny surfaces, or even the vehicle’s own paintwork can create unwanted visual artifacts.
Physical obstructions are another frequent culprit. Dirt, mud, water droplets, or snow accumulating on the camera lenses can severely impair the image quality, projecting blurry or blocked sections onto the display. Regular cleaning of the camera lenses is therefore essential for optimal performance.
Beyond these everyday factors, more persistent issues might point towards deeper problems. If the “stitching” process – where the individual camera feeds are combined into a single panoramic view – is not accurate, noticeable seams or misalignments can appear. This often requires recalibration of the camera system.
Persistent distortion that cannot be explained by the above factors may indicate underlying calibration issues or even hardware faults within the camera modules themselves. In such cases, professional diagnosis and repair might be necessary to restore the system’s intended functionality.
