Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth has declared his intention to rally the 12th Parliament to stand with the Executive in combating corruption, echoing President Museveni’s recent directives. Speaking at the Kololo Independence Grounds, Oboth-Oboth emphasized that the fight against graft and non-performance is a shared responsibility, not solely that of the Executive.
Aligning his message with the President’s State of the Nation Address, the Speaker assured that Parliament has heard and embraced the call for accountability. “The fight against corruption and non-performance is not the Executive’s fight alone; it is Parliament’s fight as well. And together, in harmony, as a nation, we will win it,” he stated.
To bolster this commitment, Oboth-Oboth plans to empower parliamentary committees with necessary resources to scrutinize public expenditure and ensure accountability across government units. He highlighted the critical role of committees in tracking public funds and preventing resource abuse, emphasizing their focus on public spending and budget oversight.
The Speaker also committed to fostering a complementary and people-centered relationship between Parliament and other government branches. He affirmed that the 12th Parliament would diligently support the government’s development strategies, particularly in transitioning the population from a subsistence to a monetary economy, and in monitoring high-impact projects under the National Development Plan IV.
Oboth-Oboth reiterated his pledge to lead a House that restores integrity, starting from within. He stressed that Parliament must hold itself accountable to effectively demand accountability from other agencies. The Speaker also linked parliamentary efforts to supporting wealth creation programs like the Parish Development Model and Emyooga.
President Museveni, in his remarks, urged all legislators, including the opposition, to be results-oriented and vowed to take action against those who fail to monitor government programs, even threatening to leverage allowances as a basis for demanding performance. The Speaker responded by pledging Parliament’s commitment to realizing the President’s progressive intentions for the nation.
