Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, has undergone a significant coaching change just weeks before the World Cup. Otto Addo, a former German-born Ghanaian international who managed the team at the Qatar World Cup, was let go following a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations qualification and a series of heavy losses in recent friendlies.
Taking the helm is experienced Portuguese manager Carlos Queiroz, a familiar face in African football with previous stints coaching South Africa and Egypt. The 73-year-old brings a wealth of experience, having also managed Real Madrid and served as assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
Queiroz immediately embarked on a rapid tour of Europe to connect with key players, but extensive tactical preparation has been limited due to the tight schedule. The squad boasts considerable individual talent, particularly in attack with players like Antoine Semenyo, but often struggles with tactical discipline and defensive solidity.
A significant challenge for Queiroz is the absence of talismanic midfielder Mohammed Kudus due to injury, who was crucial in Ghana’s successful qualification campaigns. The team also continues to grapple with finding a reliable international-class goalkeeper, a recurring issue in past tournaments.
Despite the time constraints and player availability issues, Queiroz expressed confidence. “We are running against the wind. We are running against time. But, in my experience and my expertise, and the support of the staff and especially our players, I’m very much confident that we can do well,” he stated upon his appointment.
Ghana, who first qualified for the World Cup in 2006, has a history of strong performances, including reaching the quarter-finals in 2010. Queiroz believes the nation’s rich footballing legacy provides a foundation for success. “I think that this country has a huge, enormous potential. This is a country of footballers,” he remarked.
