Security forces in Moroto, with the support of local leadership, have disposed of a significant quantity of illicit alcohol. Approximately 160 jerrycans of what is commonly known as ‘waragi’ were destroyed at the Moroto District Headquarters. The operation was conducted under a court order, emphasizing the legal framework behind such enforcement actions.
This destruction is part of a broader crackdown on the manufacture, sale, and consumption of illicit brews, directly implementing Presidential Executive Order No. 3 of 2021. Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Benson Kwikiriza highlighted that these destruction exercises occur every three months and are crucial for combating the devastating effects of illicit waragi, which has been linked to fatalities and the breakdown of families within the Karamoja Sub-Region.
Moroto Region Police Spokesperson, Mike Longole, reiterated the security forces’ dedication to eradicating this dangerous product from Karamoja. He stressed that the initiative is vital for safeguarding public health and upholding law and order. Longole further pointed out the strong correlation between the uncontrolled consumption of illicit waragi and the rise in domestic violence cases reported in the area, underscoring the multifaceted threat posed by these unregulated substances.
The continued vigilance and enforcement efforts are essential for protecting communities from the severe health and social consequences associated with illegal alcohol production and distribution. The successful seizure and destruction of these dangerous liquids represent a significant step in these ongoing efforts. This action was carried out in line with Presidential Executive Order No. 3 of 2021.
