Traders in Mbale City are grappling with immense financial losses after a devastating fire ripped through Bugema market in the Industrial City Division on Wednesday night. The inferno, which began around 11 p.m., rapidly consumed dozens of kiosks and market stalls, reducing merchandise and property worth millions of shillings to ashes.

Fueled by highly flammable materials like plastics and densely packed wooden structures in a parking yard near the Fahaab petrol station, the fire spread with alarming speed. Eyewitnesses described the area being completely engulfed within minutes.

While no injuries or fatalities were reported, the economic impact is profound. Many traders, like Sarah Namono, had recently taken out loans to restock their businesses, only to see their entire investments turn to charcoal. The prospect of repaying debts and rebuilding their livelihoods looms large and uncertain.

Frustration was evident among locals and affected business owners, who voiced concerns about a perceived delayed response from the Mbale Police Fire and Rescue Services. They believe an earlier intervention could have mitigated the extensive damage.

This incident adds to a concerning pattern of commercial fires in Mbale City, including major blazes at Kumi Road Market in July 2023 and the Mbale Main Garage in April 2022. Nationally, fire incidents remain a significant issue, with electricity faults, human negligence, and candle misuse cited as primary causes, particularly affecting residential and commercial properties.

Elgon Regional Police Spokesperson, Mr. Rogers Taitika, has confirmed the incident and stated that thorough investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.
