Authorities in Mbale City are looking into the tragic death of a young student from Mbale High School. The deceased has been identified as 16-year-old Catherine Nelima, a Senior Three student residing in the Industrial Division.
Nelima was found at her home in Bukisukye Lower Cell, Bumutoto Ward. Preliminary reports suggest the incident took place on Tuesday, June 9th, though the precise timing is still unclear.
According to police statements, Nelima’s mother, a local businesswoman, left the house for work, leaving her children at home. Upon her return around 5 PM, she found the other children had gone to nearby homes. A search of Nelima’s bedroom led to the distressing discovery of the unresponsive student.
Investigators from the Mbale Central Police Station, including the homicide unit and crime scene personnel, have visited the residence. The body has since been transferred to the Mbale City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination to determine the official cause of death.
Elgon regional police spokesperson Rogers Taitika has confirmed the ongoing investigation. He urged the public, particularly parents, guardians, and schools, to be attentive to the mental health and well-being of children. Information that could aid the investigation should be reported to Mbale Central Police Station.
