Colombia is making a highly anticipated return to the FIFA World Cup after an eight-year absence, with star forward Luis Diaz expected to carry the team’s hopes. Diaz has become the focal point for the national team, particularly under new head coach Nestor Lorenzo, the Argentine tasked with building a physically strong, attack-minded squad.

The “Cafeteros” secured an impressive third-place finish in the South American qualifiers, trailing only the reigning world champions, Argentina, in goals scored. Diaz himself was a key contributor, netting seven goals during the campaign, just one shy of the top scorer.

Their qualification campaign was marked by notable victories, including triumphs over football giants Brazil and Argentina. This success mirrors their performance at the 2024 Copa America, where they reached the final, their best showing since their 2001 victory.

Diaz’s resilience has been tested, notably when his father was abducted shortly before a crucial qualifying match against Brazil in late 2023. Despite the personal turmoil, Diaz scored twice in that game, demonstrating his mental fortitude. Though his father was held for 12 days, Diaz has since found immense success at Bayern Munich, where he has been involved in over 40 goals this season, winning the Bundesliga title and reaching the Champions League semi-finals.

The Colombian team, managed by Lorenzo, aims to surpass the expectations that overshadowed their 1994 World Cup campaign. Diaz will be supported by seasoned playmaker James Rodriguez and Sporting’s Luis Suarez as they prepare for their Group K opener on June 17 against Uzbekistan in Mexico City, followed by clashes with Portugal and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
