Joshua Menya and Mariam Mutyembu’s journey to the altar was a testament to patience, faith, and the strength of their friendship, which blossomed from simple church conversations in late 2015.
What started as casual post-service check-ins evolved into a deeper connection in 2016, marked by shared prayer and a growing understanding of their mutual values. Joshua was drawn to Mariam’s understanding nature and God-fearing spirit, seeing her as a “helper.” Mariam, in turn, admired Joshua’s steady character and devotion to his faith.
The romantic turning point arrived during a church outing to Sisiyi Falls, where Joshua surprised Mariam with a proposal. “The moment I saw what was happening, I had already said ‘yes’,” Mariam recalls, her enthusiasm palpable even years later.
When planning their wedding, the couple established a firm principle: live within their means. Setting a budget of Shs36 million, they committed to avoiding debt, relying on contributions from friends, family, and their church community. This collaborative spirit extended to the wedding’s execution, with friends stepping in to manage logistics and coordinate the event in lieu of a professional planner.
While not every detail went perfectly – a tailor missed a deadline and some décor was not as expected – Joshua and Mariam focused on the joy of the occasion. Their wedding, held in Mbale to manage costs, celebrated their union, culminating in a reception filled with happiness.
A particularly touching moment for Mariam was the surprise appearance of her best friend, who had flown in from Italy. The couple also credits premarital counseling for shaping their understanding of marriage, particularly the principle of “leave and cleave.”
Their story, rooted in quiet affection that grew into unwavering commitment, serves as an inspiration for a marriage built on shared faith, enduring friendship, and deliberate financial stewardship.
