Infantino: FIFA Not 'Kings of the World' on US Entry Issues

FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated that the organization is purely a sports body and cannot dictate entry policies for host nations like the United States. He emphasized FIFA's role in facilitating solutions behind the scenes rather than intervening directly with government immigration decisions. As the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off, President Gianni Infantino addressed concerns regarding player and official entry into the United States. Infantino clarified FIFA’s position, asserting that the organization is “not the kings of the world” and must respect the sovereignty of governments.

Responding to the rejection of a referee from Somalia, Omar Artan, due to alleged ties to terror organizations, Infantino described the situation as “unfortunate.” He explained that while FIFA strives to find solutions, direct intervention in governmental decisions like visa approvals is beyond their scope as a sports organization. Infantino suggested that a calm approach is often more effective than immediate public outcry when seeking resolutions.

Despite the challenges, Infantino expressed no regrets about selecting the U.S. as one of the host nations. He highlighted FIFA’s behind-the-scenes efforts to navigate complex situations, such as facilitating the Iranian team’s participation. “We don’t live on the moon, we live on planet Earth and we try our best,” he stated, underscoring their commitment to making the tournament a success.

Infantino also touched upon investigations into ticket pricing structures. He indicated that FIFA has received a minimal number of complaints relative to the vast number of tickets sold and remains confident in their processes, asserting that all generated revenue is reinvested into football development. He welcomed any investigations, stating FIFA is prepared to present its case.
