The race to represent Kalangala District as Woman Member of Parliament is officially underway, with five candidates having successfully completed their nominations by the Electoral Commission. This special election was triggered by the unfortunate passing of the previous MP, Helen Nakimuli, in April.

Supporters gathered at the district headquarters to witness the nominations, as candidates presented their platforms aimed at fostering development and improving the lives of the island district’s residents.

On the final day, Babirye Sharifah Kaala and Agnes Nasuuna were cleared to run. Babirye has chosen a boat as her symbol, signifying her commitment to the vital fishing communities that form a significant part of Kalangala’s economy. “The boat represents the people of Kalangala whose livelihoods depend on the lake,” she stated, emphasizing her intent to be a strong advocate for their concerns.

Babirye also highlighted the importance of palm oil farming and pledged to ensure fair returns for farmers. She aims to continue the legacy and aspirations of the late MP Nakimuli. Agnes Nasuuna, another contender, promised a focus on transformation and development across the district.

Residents expressed a desire for an accessible and accountable representative to address long-standing development issues in the district, which has existed for nearly three decades.

Fred Badda, the Resident District Commissioner, assured the public that security forces are prepared to ensure a peaceful electoral process, allowing candidates to campaign freely and voters to cast their ballots without hindrance.

The nominated candidates include Iren Nampala (NUP), Aidah Nabayigga (NRM), and independent candidates Sharifah Kaala, Agnes Nasuuna, and Flavia Hellen. Campaigning is set to begin on June 12 and will conclude on June 22, with the election taking place on June 24.
