Buganda Kingdom is calling on its county leaders to play a crucial role in mending societal divisions that may have arisen following the recent elections. Joseph Kawuki, Minister for Local Government, Kabaka’s Tours and Diaspora Affairs, emphasized the importance of unity and social cohesion during a meeting with county chiefs and their deputies at Bulange.
Kawuki highlighted that county chiefs are the primary link between the Kingdom’s leadership and the grassroots. They are responsible for implementing Kingdom programmes, delivering services, and relaying feedback from communities to the central leadership. “County Chiefs are the driving force behind the implementation of Buganda Kingdom activities and programs,” stated Kawuki, underscoring their pivotal role.
The minister further noted that the recent election period left many citizens with diverse emotions, ranging from celebration to disappointment. He urged county leaders to guide and support the populace, helping them regain confidence and unite behind the Kingdom’s objectives. Beyond political reconciliation, Kawuki also addressed emerging social and economic challenges, urging leaders to assist vulnerable residents and ensure they remain engaged with the Kingdom’s initiatives.
As preparations for the annual Masaza Football Tournament gain momentum, county chiefs have been directed to promote discipline among participants and spectators, uphold cultural values, and reinforce leadership structures at all levels. They are also encouraged to support lower administrative bodies and maintain transparency.
Representatives from the County Chiefs’ Council affirmed the value of regular engagements with ministers to enhance service delivery and communication. The meetings are seen as vital for assessing programme effectiveness, particularly for initiatives like “Situla Omutindo,” which aims to improve service delivery across Buganda. Leaders also stressed the importance of adhering to health guidelines during the Masaza tournament, especially concerning public health concerns.
