Ali Lutwama Shines as Muteesa I Royal University Clinch First League Title

Ali Lutwama has emerged as the star player of the 2026 Pepsi University Football League, leading Muteesa I Royal University to their first-ever league championship. Lutwama’s exceptional performances throughout the season culminated in him being awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) accolade at the league’s awards ceremony.

His individual brilliance was not limited to the MVP award. Lutwama also secured the Best Midfielder award and was named in the prestigious Team of the Season. His impact on the pitch was undeniable, contributing eight goals in ten matches, including four goals and four assists that helped power Muteesa to victory.

The attacking midfielder expressed confidence in his achievements, stating, “I deserved to win the awards. The season was not difficult because as our assistant coach Ssebowa often tells us if you train hard, you fight easy. So we trained hard and fought easy.” He believes these awards could serve as a significant stepping stone for his professional football career.

Muteesa I Royal University dominated the awards night, with head coach George Williams Ssengabi also receiving the Coach of the Season award. The team secured their maiden title by defeating YMCA Comprehensive Institute 1-0 in the final, with Sam Mutambo scoring the decisive goal.

Other notable award winners included YMCA’s Kevin Ssebabulya for Best Goalkeeper, St. Lawrence University’s Vincent Agaku for Best Defender, and Uganda Martyrs University’s Ronald Obedgiu as the league’s top scorer with five goals. Lutwama, alongside his coach and teammates who also made the Team of the Season, celebrated a landmark achievement for Muteesa I Royal University.
