The State House Investors Protection Unit (SHIPU) recently hosted a significant dialogue aimed at bolstering Uganda’s investment climate. The meeting brought together key figures from the manufacturing and digital technology industries, including representatives from Huawei Uganda, government officials, and various investors.
Chaired by SHIPU Head Col. Edith Nakalema, the session focused on strengthening the partnership between the government and the private sector. The objective was to identify and address challenges hindering business growth, streamline policy implementation, and create a more stable and attractive environment for both local and foreign investment.
Col. Nakalema emphasized SHIPU’s commitment to ensuring that investors receive timely support and operate within a coordinated government framework. She highlighted the President’s directive on prompt investor attention and noted the unit’s role in facilitating business growth rather than conducting investigations, coordinating with relevant agencies when needed.
Hon. Sanjay Tanna, Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to a business-friendly atmosphere. He stressed the importance of continuous dialogue with investors and manufacturers to address concerns such as taxation, production costs, and regulatory hurdles, while ensuring sustainable development.
Hon. Aminah Mukalazi, State Minister for Privatisation and Investment, commended SHIPU for its role in creating a responsive platform for investors. She pledged continued support for investor protection, local content promotion, and inter-agency coordination to improve service delivery.
During the discussions, local investors raised concerns regarding the implementation of policies like the ban on unprocessed timber exports, calling for practical solutions that balance economic growth with environmental sustainability. Manufacturers also voiced concerns about tax policies and production costs, advocating for greater private sector involvement in policy formulation.
This collaborative effort underscores Uganda’s commitment to fostering innovation, industrial expansion, and a robust investment ecosystem. The dialogue served as a platform for constructive engagement, paving the way for enhanced public-private partnerships. Huawei Uganda was recognized for its contributions to digital transformation, education, and connectivity initiatives within the country.
