The Ugandan government is set to reconsider its policy regarding the payment of medical interns. This announcement comes after significant concerns were voiced in Parliament, highlighting the potential impact on the healthcare system.

Vice President Jessica Alupo addressed the issue during a plenary session, acknowledging the apprehension surrounding the discontinuation of monthly allowances for medical interns, a move reportedly set to take effect in August 2026. She stated that the proposed Medical Education and Internship Policy would be a subject of discussion within the Cabinet.

“We can definitely review this policy,” Alupo assured the House, emphasizing that government policies are ultimately intended for the benefit of the people. The Minister of Health is expected to present a formal statement to Parliament detailing the findings of this review.

The Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, brought the matter to the forefront, reiterating media reports that medical interns would cease to receive payment. He underscored the crucial role these interns play in the functioning of government hospitals and health centers, often working extended hours to provide essential medical care.

Hon. Ssenyonyi questioned how medical interns would sustain themselves, particularly given the demanding nature of their work. He urged the government to urgently find the necessary funds to continue their remuneration, drawing a parallel to recent government measures to save money, such as suspending public holiday functions.

The new policy, as previously announced, aims to integrate medical internship into the formal university education system, leading to the suspension of the monthly allowance. This review signifies a potential shift in approach to support the vital contribution of medical interns.
