Uganda Airlines is set to significantly expand its fleet with the signing of a Shs3.7 trillion deal with global aircraft giant Boeing. This landmark agreement, witnessed by President Yoweri Museveni, will see the national carrier take delivery of 10 new aircraft.
The acquisition includes eight Boeing passenger planes, each capable of seating 294 passengers, and two dedicated cargo freighters. This strategic move is designed to enhance Uganda’s connectivity, boost tourism and trade, and establish the country as a pivotal aviation hub within the region.
The Minister of Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, highlighted the necessity of this investment for Uganda’s global integration, stating, “We need to build our own airline. That is how Uganda can be connected to the rest of the world.” The first phase of deliveries will include four of the large passenger aircraft.
This expansion comes at a critical time for Uganda Airlines, which has recently faced operational challenges due to a shortage of available aircraft, leading to temporary route suspensions and reliance on leased planes. The government has allocated Shs422.26 billion to support this fleet expansion as part of a wider strategy aligned with infrastructure development, including airport upgrades.
This deal marks a crucial step in Uganda’s ambition to reduce reliance on transit hubs, increase direct international flights, and attract foreign investment. Boeing has also committed to supporting Uganda Airlines with technical expertise and training to ensure the airline’s long-term success and sustainable growth.
