Three individuals have been officially nominated as candidates in the upcoming by-election for the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament seat. The nominations took place on the first day designated by the Electoral Commission (EC).

The by-election was necessitated by the passing of the former MP, Helen Nakimuli, who died on April 19, 2026. She had recently secured re-election for a second term but tragically passed away at the age of 40 after a surgical procedure.

The candidates who successfully completed the nomination process are Aidah Nabayiga, representing the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, Irene Nampala from the National Unity Platform (NUP), and Flavia Nagawa, running as an independent.

EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi reported that the nomination process was smooth and urged all remaining aspirants to adhere strictly to nomination guidelines and electoral laws to prevent any disruptions. He emphasized the importance of accurate form completion and meeting all legal prerequisites.

Following the conclusion of nominations, the EC plans to convene meetings with the nominated candidates and their agents. The purpose of these meetings will be to determine campaign schedules and establish clear guidelines. Official campaign activities are expected to commence thereafter, following the electoral roadmap provided by the commission. The EC also stressed the critical need for peaceful campaigning, calling on candidates, their supporters, and political parties to respect electoral laws and foster harmony throughout the entire electoral process.
