Parliament Denies Employing Defeated MPs Amidst Social Media Rumors
The Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesige, has refuted claims that former Members of Parliament who lost their seats in the recent elections have been hired into the Parliamentary Service. He confirmed that while some expressed interest in joining, no applications were approved, with the exception of one individual employed on the President's advice. Recent social media allegations suggesting that Parliament has hired several former legislators who failed to secure re-election have been firmly denied by the Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesige.
Reports circulating on X (formerly Twitter) claimed that ex-MPs, particularly allies of former Speaker Anita Among, were appointed to various positions within the Speaker’s office, including the Executive Secretary’s Office, Research Directorate, Protocol Office, and Hansard Department.
Mwesige clarified that while a few former MPs had formally expressed interest in joining the Parliamentary Service in writing, their applications were not successful. “It is not true that former MPs were given employment here; you can even check on our payroll, they are not there,” Mwesige stated.
He further explained that only one former MP is currently employed within the Parliamentary Service, and this appointment was made on the advice of President Yoweri Museveni. This individual had prior experience in the Parliamentary Service before becoming a legislator.
The Clerk noted that the applications of interest were submitted before investigations into the former parliamentary leadership commenced. He emphasized that the individuals named in the social media reports are not currently on Parliament’s payroll.
Speaker Jacob Oboth-Oboth declined to comment on the matter, citing the need to maintain impartiality while parliamentary issues are under review. He deferred further details to the Clerk.
This clarification comes at a time when Parliament is under intense public scrutiny due to ongoing investigations into corruption allegations against former Speaker Anita Among. The Inspector General of Government recently submitted a report on these investigations to President Museveni.
One of the individuals wrongly named in the social media claims also denied ever applying for a position within Parliament, labelling the information as unverified.
