The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has once again conducted an operation in the Lubigi Wetland, resulting in the arrest of three people. NEMA spokesperson William Lubuulwa confirmed the arrests of two women and one man, who are currently detained at Lubigi Police Station pending court proceedings.

This latest action comes after NEMA had previously demolished houses in the wetland, only for some residents to return and erect temporary shelters. Officials state their visit was to reiterate the directive for residents to vacate the area.

Reports indicate that at least 15 families who had returned to the wetland were instructed to remove their belongings. Among those affected is Vincent Iruumba, a traditional healer whose house was razed. He stated he has been living in an abandoned container with his seven children, struggling to find alternative accommodation. Iruumba mentioned that relief funds he received were used for school fees, leaving him reliant on well-wishers for daily sustenance.

Another resident, Ivan Balubinzi, a supporter of the National Unity Platform (NUP), expressed surprise when asked to dismantle a temporary structure that had been spared in the initial demolition. This structure, which had served as his bar and a makeshift office for NUP supporters, is now slated for removal. Balubinzi has appealed to the NUP leadership for assistance.

The ongoing evictions and demolitions highlight the persistent challenges faced by returnees in the Lubigi Wetland as authorities enforce environmental protection measures. The situation leaves vulnerable families in precarious living conditions with uncertain futures.
