For decades, the Karamoja region in northeastern Uganda was synonymous with insecurity and isolation, deterring significant investment. However, the recent launch of construction for Kidepo International Airport marks a potential turning point, with government officials anticipating a revitalized economy.
President Yoweri Museveni officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for the airport in Karenga District. The project, funded by the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry to the tune of over USD 72 million, is designed to significantly improve access to Kidepo Valley National Park and other resource-rich areas. Plans include a substantial runway and large passenger and cargo terminals, aiming to position Karamoja as a key destination for tourism and commerce.
During the launch, President Museveni highlighted the airport’s role in tapping into the region’s tourism potential and natural resources, contrasting the current development with past challenges of insecurity and underdevelopment. He emphasized that the restored peace has paved the way for such large-scale investments, expecting the airport to boost tourism, attract investors, and create much-needed jobs.
Beyond tourism, the airport is expected to facilitate trade and industrial activities, sectors the government sees as crucial for Karamoja’s future. Local leaders and officials, including the Minister for Karamoja Affairs-designate, Dr. John Baptist Lokii, view the airport as part of a broader positive transformation, bolstered by improved security and increasing investor interest in areas like mining and manufacturing.
With international backing from financiers like the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who express confidence in Uganda’s economic outlook, the Kidepo International Airport project symbolizes a determined effort to connect Karamoja to global markets and establish it as a significant player on Uganda’s economic map. The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority has confirmed that regulatory assessments are complete to ensure compliance with international aviation standards.
