Police in Kamuli District have arrested Sight Akankunda in connection with the abduction of a two-year-old boy. The arrest occurred in Kikajjo Zone, Wakiso District, after a two-week manhunt, with the suspect now detained at Kamuli Central Police Station.

The investigation began on May 20 when the child’s father, George Bagalawa, reported his son missing. Mr. Bagalawa, a mechanic, stated that the child was taken by a female neighbor he knew only by sight. Preliminary police findings suggest the woman had rented a house in the area under suspicious circumstances as part of a planned child-abduction scheme.

Mr. Bagalawa reported that the suspect had rented a room in his neighborhood for two months, but only occupied it for a few days before disappearing with his son on May 19. She reportedly left with all her belongings. “I had heard reports of child abductions in Kampala and surrounding areas, but I never imagined my family would become a victim,” Mr. Bagalawa told police, realizing the rental appeared to be a cover for the abduction.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect had introduced herself to locals as Charity Nantume, actively hiding her true identity. “Using modern investigative techniques, detectives traced the suspect through her relatives, some of whom were interviewed to aid the investigations,” stated Busoga North Regional Police spokesperson, Mr. Samson Lubega.

A significant break in the case came when the missing child was found abandoned approximately 300 meters from his father’s home late on May 21. Residents heard the child crying and reunited him with his family. Investigators subsequently confirmed the suspect’s identity as Sight Akankunda, leading to her arrest in Wakiso.

“The case file has been completed and is ready for submission to the Resident State Attorney in Kamuli for legal scrutiny and sanction before court proceedings commence,” Mr. Lubega added. Police have thanked the public for their cooperation and vowed to continue efforts against child-related crimes.
