Patients in Jinja will no longer face lengthy queues for paper-based registrations thanks to the introduction of a new Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital and Nalufenya Children’s Hospital. The initiative, supported by the Ministry of Health and development partners, aims to transform how patient data is managed.

Upon arrival, patients’ details are captured digitally and assigned a unique identification number. This number will serve as a patient’s identifier for all future visits to either facility, eliminating the need for repetitive paperwork. The hospital has implemented a Local Area Network connected to specialized software, Clinical Master, facilitating electronic patient registration and seamless sharing of medical information among healthcare professionals.

The digital workflow extends to diagnostics. Following a patient examination, lab tests are requested electronically, and results are uploaded directly into the system for the attending clinician. This paperless process not only speeds up diagnosis and treatment but also aligns with environmental conservation efforts.

Hospital officials anticipate that the EMR system will significantly improve data accuracy, allow for quicker access to patient histories, and reduce errors associated with manual record-keeping. This will ultimately enhance the overall efficiency of healthcare delivery.

While the system currently operates within Jinja’s facilities, sharing records with other hospitals, such as Mulago, remains a challenge due to confidentiality protocols and ongoing system development. However, discussions are underway in other East African nations to enable cross-institutional data sharing, indicating a potential future for integrated electronic health records.
