Following the tragic death of rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, leaders from the Bugisu sub-region have publicly called for a transparent and public trial of the suspects involved in his alleged mob killing. Gongodyo, a forward for the Rugby Cranes and Stanbic Black Pirates, was reportedly killed by a mob in Kampala on accusations of handbag snatching.
During Gongodyo’s burial in Sironko District, FDC presidential candidate Nathan Nandala Mafabi emphasized the region’s desire for justice. He urged the government to prioritize combating crime over political endeavors, stating, “Bugisu wants justice through a fair and transparent process.” The sentiment was echoed by the Umukuuka of the Bugisu Cultural Institution, Mr. Jude Mike Mudoma, who condemned mob justice as a “blind, lawless monster.” Mudoma highlighted the tragedy of Gongodyo’s death despite his pleas of innocence, underscoring how mobs disregard truth and evidence.
Mr. Steven Masiga, spokesperson for the Bugisu Cultural Institution, declared their commitment to seeing justice served. “We demand a full open and public trial and it should take place in the very place that the deceased was killed from,” he stated, advocating for a trial to be held publicly to serve as a strong warning against mob vigilantism.
Gongodyo was remembered as a disciplined sportsman, a Makerere University student, and a pivotal player in the Pirates’ 2025 Premiership title win. His father, lawyer Mr. James Gyabi, eulogized him as a hardworking and beloved son, expressing pride in his achievements despite initial reservations about his rugby career. The deceased is survived by his wife and two children.
Preliminary police investigations have led to the arrest of suspects including Roden Ayebazibwe, Noordin Ssebagala, and Juliet Namukose, as investigations continue. This incident highlights the ongoing concerns about mob justice in Uganda, with leaders pushing for accountability.
