WHO Chief Urges End to Ebola Travel Bans, Citing Economic Harm

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), has strongly advocated against the imposition of blanket travel bans by foreign nations on countries dealing with Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreaks. During a visit to an Ebola isolation center in Kampala, Uganda, Dr. Tedros stated that such measures are not only ineffective in controlling the epidemic but also have detrimental economic consequences.

He emphasized that when a country, like Uganda, reports transparently about its situation, imposing broad travel restrictions undermines this openness. Several nations, including the USA and UAE, have enacted travel bans or restrictions on travelers from Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) due to the outbreak, a move Dr. Tedros urged them to reconsider.

Uganda’s Ministry of Health officials have echoed these sentiments, feeling that the nation is being penalized for its transparency. Dr. Tedros pointed out that studies indicate travel restrictions merely delay the inevitable and are not a viable solution, stressing that the focus should be on addressing the disease at its source.

Unlike COVID-19, Ebola requires direct contact to spread, making basic preventive measures highly effective in preventing or containing outbreaks. The WHO chief highlighted that containment is best achieved by tackling the disease in the epicenter of the outbreak.

Uganda has reported a number of confirmed cases and one death as of early June 2026, with a significant portion being imported cases. The DRC faces a more severe situation with hundreds of confirmed cases and dozens of deaths. Despite these challenges, Uganda has implemented border and market restrictions to curb the spread from the DRC and is planning to establish Ebola treatment centers in the DRC to bolster regional response efforts.
