Ugandans are increasingly concerned about public safety as a wave of violent crimes sweeps across the nation. Recent incidents, including the tragic death of Rugby Cranes player Sydney Gongodyo, who was allegedly attacked by a mob in Kampala, have highlighted a worrying trend of vigilantism alongside rampant murders and robberies.

In the Kigezi sub-region, police data indicates a rise in murder cases, with domestic disputes and land conflicts cited as primary drivers. Eight murders were recorded in April, increasing to ten in May, with police intensifying community policing to address the issue. Similarly, Kaberamaido District is investigating the hacking death of a businessman, with preliminary findings pointing to a land dispute.

Further north, in Omoro and Gulu districts, a series of armed robberies and killings has left security forces puzzled. Stolen police firearms and the presence of armed cartels are major concerns. These incidents include the daring raid on Lalogi police station, where an officer’s rifle was stolen, and several armed robberies targeting businesses and individuals.

In the West Nile region, residents are living in fear due to escalating theft and burglary. Police have increased intelligence-led operations and the arrest of suspected gang members. Meanwhile, reports of theft and housebreaking are also on the rise in Mbarara City, with some residents attributing the increase to unemployment following recent trade regulations.

Authorities are working to address these security challenges through increased police presence, community engagement, and intelligence operations. However, concerns remain about the effectiveness of these measures and the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle the root causes of crime, including poverty, drug abuse, and underlying social disputes.
