A vibrant community Grill Fiesta held in Berlin on Saturday, June 6, 2026, brought together Ugandans residing in Germany. This significant gathering aimed to strengthen community ties, celebrate Ugandan culture, and crucially, address the often-overlooked issue of men’s mental health.
Organized with support from the Ugandan Embassy in Berlin, the event provided a vital platform for diaspora members from diverse backgrounds. It facilitated networking, cultural exchange, and open discussions focused on the emotional and psychological well-being of men. Held during Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, the fiesta sought to dismantle the stigma that frequently prevents men from seeking help.
Minister Counsellor Jacqueline Banana Wabyona of the Ugandan Embassy lauded the community’s initiative, highlighting its role in promoting unity and social support for Ugandans abroad. She emphasized how such events complement the embassy’s efforts to maintain connections with the diaspora and support their welfare.
Geoffrey Namara, an epidemiologist with the World Health Organization and a key speaker, commended the focus on men’s mental health, an issue with profound impacts on individuals, families, and communities. Ugandan-born doctor Raymond Luyima stressed the importance of creating safe spaces for men to discuss their challenges, encouraging early help-seeking and reducing isolation.
Participants engaged in sharing experiences and brainstorming ways the community can support men dealing with stress, anxiety, and depression, particularly as they navigate life away from home. Organizers noted that despite increased global mental health awareness, men are still less likely to seek professional help, making community-led initiatives essential for education and support.
Beyond the important dialogue, the Grill Fiesta was a lively celebration of Ugandan heritage, featuring traditional food, music, and social interaction, reinforcing a strong sense of belonging. The event also underscored the deep and enduring relationship between Uganda and Germany, celebrating decades of mutual respect and cooperation, with diaspora engagement serving as a key bridge for people-to-people connections.
This initiative underscores the Ugandan community’s dedication to fostering both cultural pride and holistic well-being among its members in Germany.
