The Parliament of Uganda is scheduled to debate and vote on a government proposal to secure a loan amounting to approximately Shs734.2 billion (EUR 168,976,354). The funds are earmarked for the second phase of developing solar-powered irrigation systems, a critical initiative aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and enhancing water access nationwide.

The motion, formally announced via the Parliament’s X account on Tuesday, will be presented by the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. This move signals a significant investment in modernizing Uganda’s agricultural infrastructure.

The solar irrigation project, spearheaded by the Ministry of Water and Environment in partnership with UK-based contractor Nexus Green Ltd and funded by UK Export Finance, seeks to address water scarcity and mitigate the impacts of drought. The initiative aims to increase water supply for both domestic use and agricultural irrigation, thereby improving food security and resilience to climate change.

The first phase of the project, which commenced around 2021, focused on developing numerous water supply sites across various districts. This new phase is expected to build upon that success, further expanding the reach and impact of solar-powered water solutions for rural communities and farmers. The project’s scope includes designing water systems, installing solar pumping infrastructure, constructing storage facilities, and establishing distribution networks.

Beneficiaries are expected to include rural populations, farmers, women, and youth, who will experience improved water access, increased agricultural yields, and potential economic benefits. The initiative is a key component of Uganda’s strategy to achieve greater food security and climate resilience.
