Namisindwa district is facing a potential humanitarian crisis as enormous cracks, caused by relentless rainfall, threaten the safety of over 500 villages across five sub-counties. Residents are living in constant fear as these fissures widen daily, swallowing homes, schools, and vital farmland.
Local leaders, including LC5 Chairperson Emma Bwayo, have conducted assessments and are warning of dire consequences if the government does not intervene quickly. Many families have already been displaced, while others remain trapped in their vulnerable homes with limited access to essential resources. The destruction of crops, including maize, beans, and bananas, is a severe blow to the livelihoods of farmers and threatens food security in the region.
Environmental experts caution that the ongoing heavy rains could exacerbate the situation, potentially triggering more destructive landslides, similar to past tragedies in neighboring districts like Bududa and Sironko, which have claimed hundreds of lives over the years. Infrastructure, including water sources and roads, has also been impacted, further isolating affected communities.
Residents are appealing for immediate government assistance, including emergency relief and long-term strategies to mitigate the recurring landslide threat. The slow progress of previous resettlement plans also highlights the ongoing vulnerability of communities living in these high-risk mountainous areas. Without urgent action, Namisindwa could face one of Uganda’s deadliest landslide disasters.
