President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, in his capacity as the current Chairperson of the East African Community (EAC), met with EAC Secretary-General Mr. Stephen Patrick Mbundi and his delegation to discuss the bloc’s progress and future direction.

The discussions, also attended by Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, centered on key integration pillars including trade, infrastructure, health, and institutional challenges.

President Museveni stressed the importance of robust regional cooperation and the efficient execution of programs designed to uplift the lives of East Africans. He specifically called for a more structured engagement with the East African Business Council to ensure it supports, rather than hinders, the growth of the regional market.

A significant focus was placed on transport infrastructure. The President advocated for a rationalized system where railways handle heavy cargo and petroleum products, reserving roads for passenger traffic and lighter goods. He directed transport authorities and EAC officials to collaborate on practical solutions for regional connectivity.

Additionally, President Museveni expressed strong support for a proposal requiring non-member countries exporting into the EAC market to contribute financially to the Community, calling the idea “fantastic” and innovative.

Secretary-General Mbundi highlighted the urgency of establishing an East African Monetary Union, noting that currency fluctuations among member states significantly impede business and affect ordinary citizens. He proposed a phased approach to implementing a common currency, suggesting that countries able to meet convergence criteria could proceed, with others joining later.

Mr. Mbundi also outlined his priorities, which include enhancing climate resilience in agriculture, improving food security, and expanding access to renewable energy across the region.
