President Yoweri Museveni, in his capacity as Chairperson of the East African Community (EAC), has strongly advocated for accelerated regional integration. During a meeting with EAC Secretary-General Mr. Stephen Patrick Mbundi and his delegation, the President emphasized the critical need to bolster infrastructure, enhance trade facilitation, and expedite the establishment of a common currency.
President Museveni highlighted the importance of rationalizing transport systems, suggesting that railways should handle heavy cargo and petroleum products, while roads are reserved for passenger traffic and lighter goods. He directed transport authorities and EAC officials to collaborate on developing practical solutions for regional connectivity.
Furthermore, the President expressed support for a proposal requiring non-member countries exporting goods into the EAC market to contribute financially to the Community, viewing it as an innovative idea worthy of consideration. This move aims to ensure that external trade benefits also contribute to the region’s development.
R. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, acknowledged the significant responsibility placed on the EAC leadership, particularly under President Museveni’s chairmanship, recognizing him as a prominent champion of regional integration.
Secretary General Mbundi urged President Museveni to encourage regional central bank governors to expedite progress on the East African Monetary Union. He noted that currency fluctuations among member states are a significant hindrance to businesses and ordinary citizens. Mbundi proposed a phased approach to currency adoption, suggesting that countries ready to meet convergence criteria could proceed first, allowing others to join later.
Mbundi also outlined his priorities, including strengthening climate resilience, food security, and expanding access to renewable energy across the region. The EAC Secretariat plans to focus on climate-smart agriculture, reducing post-harvest losses, improving water resource management in the Lake Victoria Basin, and scaling up renewable energy solutions.
