President Yoweri Museveni has directed veteran leaders to provide an account for Shs231 billion that was disbursed to support wealth creation programs for bush war heroes. The directive was issued during the 37th Heroes’ Day celebrations, held with limited physical attendance at State Lodge, Nakasero, due to Ebola restrictions.

President Museveni thanked the civilian and armed veterans who participated in the 1981-1986 liberation struggle, acknowledging their role in establishing a stable and well-governed Uganda. He noted that the country’s democracy, security, and economy had collapsed under previous leadership, making the struggle a necessary choice for survival.

The Head of State recalled a 2009 agreement where veterans were to receive financial support, including Shs5 million to each veteran leader and their wives, and Shs1.5 million to support cadres. He expressed the need to understand the utilization of these funds.

In addition to the financial accountability, President Museveni announced plans to establish seedling breeding facilities at presidential farms to supply veterans and their children with resources for wealth creation. He also confirmed the government’s intention to acquire 60 acres of land for a liberation war museum.

Furthermore, the President directed his Principal Private Secretary to expedite treatment arrangements for veterans at Entebbe Grade B Hospital, aiming to prevent misuse of funds on private medical facilities.

Vice President Jessica Alupo and Minister for the Presidency Milly Babirye Babalanda also paid tribute to the national heroes, emphasizing that Uganda’s progress was achieved through sacrifice. The Minister of State for Luweero Triangle Affairs, Alice Kaboyo, commended the veterans for their contributions to shaping Uganda’s history and praised the peace and security brought by the NRM government.
