During the 37th Heroes’ Day celebrations, President Yoweri Museveni addressed veteran leaders, demanding a detailed account of Shs231 billion allocated to support bush war heroes. The funds were reportedly earmarked for wealth creation initiatives across the country.

The President expressed gratitude to civilian and armed veterans for their role in the 1981-1986 liberation struggle, which he stated was necessary to overcome a period of poor governance, insecurity, and economic collapse. He emphasized that the struggle was a choice between survival and continued national decline.

In addition to the financial accountability, President Museveni announced plans to establish seedling breeding facilities at presidential farms to provide resources for veterans and their families for wealth creation. He also confirmed the government’s intent to purchase 60 acres of land to establish a liberation war museum.

Further directives were issued regarding the treatment of veterans, with instructions to expedite arrangements at Entebbe Grade B Hospital to prevent the misuse of funds in private facilities. The President also advised veterans to reform their Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs) to facilitate government support.

Vice President Jessica Alupo and other officials acknowledged the sacrifices of the heroes and the NRM government’s role in bringing peace and security to Uganda, which has enabled economic growth. They praised President Museveni’s consistent efforts to mainstream heroes’ programs.

This year’s Heroes’ Day was marked by limited physical attendance due to Ebola restrictions, with celebrations held at State Lodge, Nakasero.
