An evening robbery gone fatal has left residents of Kalongo Town Council in Agago District in shock after a local businessman, Morish Ocana, was shot dead. The incident occurred around 7 pm on Tuesday as Ocana was leaving his shop.

According to Agago Resident District Commissioner James Nabinson Kidega, an armed suspect approached Ocana shortly after he had locked up his business premises. The gunman reportedly demanded a bag believed to contain cash. When the businessman resisted, the assailant drew a concealed pistol and fired at Ocana before escaping with the bag.

It remains unclear if the perpetrator acted alone, as he fled on foot. Security forces have since cordoned off sections of the area and launched a manhunt for the suspect. RDC Kidega suggested that the attacker might be part of a larger group of armed individuals who have been terrorizing the wider Acholi Sub-region.

The Acholi Sub-region has recently experienced a concerning increase in armed violence, leading to several deaths and injuries. Incidents include the fatal attack on a police officer in Lalogi, a gunpoint robbery of a businessman in the same town, the shooting of a food vendor and boda-boda rider in Omoro District, and a raid on a mobile money shop in Omoro where agents were killed. Gulu District and Gulu City have also seen a spate of violent attacks, including the shooting of a security guard, a mason, and the robbery of boda-boda riders and their motorcycles.

Authorities are actively working to apprehend those responsible for these crimes and have indicated that efforts are underway to tackle the organized criminal elements suspected of operating across multiple regions. The army has linked some attackers to armed cartels active in the Lango, West Nile, and Acholi Sub-regions.
