National rugby player Sydney Gongodyo has been tragically killed in a mob attack in Bukoto, Kampala. Eight suspects are now in custody following the incident on Friday, June 5, 2026. The 27-year-old, a key player for the Rugby Cranes and Stanbic Black Pirates, was reportedly set upon by a crowd after an accusation of snatching a woman’s handbag, an allegation that remains unconfirmed.
Despite police intervention and attempts to provide medical aid at Mulago National Referral Hospital, Gongodyo succumbed to his injuries. The Uganda Rugby Union has expressed deep sorrow over the loss, with President Godwin Kayangwe calling it a “monumental loss to the sport.” The incident has led to the postponement of a crucial Uganda Rugby Premiership semi-final match.
Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala stated that investigations are actively continuing to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the fatal attack, emphasizing that participation in mob justice is a capital offense. This incident brings into sharp focus the pervasive problem of vigilantism in Uganda.
According to the 2025 Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report, mob action contributed to 950 murder cases, representing over 22% of all homicides recorded that year. The Kampala Metropolitan East region, where Gongodyo was attacked, is identified as a significant hotspot for such incidents. Authorities warn that such chaotic situations can be exploited by criminals, and human rights organizations suggest public distrust in the justice system fuels this dangerous trend.
Police are urging the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and assure that all perpetrators will face murder charges as the investigation progresses.
