Ten people are now in custody following the violent death of Sydney Gongodyo, a prominent player for the Ugandan national rugby team, the Rugby Cranes.
Gongodyo, 27, a forward for the Rugby Cranes and the Stanbic Black Pirates Rugby Club, was tragically killed on Friday, June 5, 2026, in Bukoto, a Kampala suburb. The latest arrests bring the total number of suspects to 10, with police naming Mugwiisa Obed and security guard Owino Joseph as the most recent additions to those in custody.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Racheal Kawala, Mugwiisa Obed was identified from video footage carrying a large log during the attack. “He led investigators to a local laundry where he had taken the yellow T-shirt he was seen wearing on the day of the attack. The garment was subsequently recovered,” Ms. Kawala stated.
The deceased was a Makerere University student and was reportedly attacked by a mob following a false accusation of snatching a woman’s handbag. Despite attempts by police to rush him to Mulago National Referral Hospital, Gongodyo succumbed to his severe injuries.
His death has deeply affected the sporting community, leading to the postponement of key rugby matches. The Uganda Rugby Union President, Godwin Kayangwe, termed it a “monumental loss.”
This incident highlights Uganda’s ongoing problem with mob justice. Police report that in 2025, mob action was linked to 950 murders, constituting 22.4% of homicides nationwide. The Kampala Metropolitan area is particularly noted for such incidents, where alleged low-level offenses can result in fatal beatings.
Police are continuing to identify and apprehend other individuals involved, warning that participation in a mob killing is a capital offense. All those identified will face murder charges, emphasizing that public frustration is not a justification for taking a life.
