The Uganda Police Force has issued a strong condemnation of mob justice, emphasizing that such acts are unlawful and undermine the rule of law.
Police Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rusoke Kituuma, stated that vigilante actions often result in the death of individuals, sometimes innocent ones, who are targeted under the false pretense of justice.
ACP Rusoke revealed that criminals are increasingly exploiting mob action to settle personal grievances or frame innocent people. He urged the public to hand over any apprehended suspects to the nearest police station without subjecting them to any form of harm, torture, or assault.
“Participation in mob action constitutes a serious criminal offence and may attract charges, including murder,” ACP Rusoke warned.
This statement comes shortly after the recent mob killing of 27-year-old rugby player Sydney Gongondyo in Kampala on suspicion of theft. Three individuals have been arrested in connection with this incident. Police registered the murder case in Nakawa Division on June 5, 2026.
In a sobering statistic, Uganda registered 950 cases of murder by mob action in 2025, accounting for 22.4% of the 4,238 homicide cases reported that year.
