Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth has declared the Parliament’s unwavering commitment to supporting the government’s ambitious economic transformation agenda. This strategy aims to propel Uganda’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from its current US$50 billion to a remarkable US$500 billion by the year 2040.

Oboth conveyed this assurance on behalf of the 12th Parliament during President Yoweri Museveni’s State of the Nation address, delivered at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds. The annual address, mandated by the Constitution, serves to outline government achievements, address national challenges, and present future legislative and policy priorities.

In his address to the newly sworn-in Members of Parliament, Speaker Oboth urged them to prioritize service delivery and remain focused on fulfilling their electoral promises and the expectations of their constituents. “An election victory is only the foundation of leadership. What follows is the hefty responsibility of governance, fulfilling campaign promises and ensuring social cohesion,” he stated.

This year’s State of the Nation address holds particular significance as it marks the first of five such addresses expected during the current presidential term. Due to precautionary measures against the Ebola outbreak, physical attendance at the event was limited to Members of Parliament.

The resolutions arising from the subsequent parliamentary debate on the State of the Nation address will be formally communicated to the President.
