The National Unity Platform (NUP) has named its leadership for the parliamentary caucus, with Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze taking the helm as chairperson. Nyendo-Mukungwe MP Gyaviira Lubowa Ssebina has been appointed as her deputy. The appointments were announced during the party’s third parliamentary induction meeting in Kampala.

Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi urged the newly appointed officials and all NUP MPs to maintain integrity and resist any temptations towards corruption. He emphasized that the party has a zero-tolerance policy for graft and will not hesitate to take firm action against any member found involved in corrupt practices. “We have come out strongly even against our own party leaders, and we hope no one reaches that level. Let us work for the people,” Ssenyonyi stated.

These remarks come in the wake of past controversies, including the fallout with former Leader of the Opposition Mathias Mpuuga over allegations concerning parliamentary service awards. Mpuuga eventually left NUP, citing unfair treatment, while the party maintained its stance against corruption.

Both Nambooze and Ssebina expressed gratitude for the trust placed in them. Ssebina, who also serves as the shadow minister for Finance, acknowledged the challenge but affirmed his commitment to upholding integrity. Nambooze will concurrently chair Parliament’s Local Government Committee.

The NUP parliamentary caucus plays a crucial role in coordinating the party’s legislators, connecting Parliament to the party’s leadership, shaping legislative strategies, and ensuring discipline and cohesion among MPs. The caucus leadership will collaborate closely with the shadow cabinet under the LoP’s oversight.

During the induction, former MPs advised the newly elected legislators on financial discipline and the importance of thorough preparation, particularly for shadow ministers needing to present alternative policy positions. NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya pledged to institutionalize regular induction and mentorship sessions for MPs throughout the term.
