In a significant move towards digital transformation within Uganda’s education sector, over 150 teachers in Entebbe Municipality have received training on the new ‘Walimu App’. This initiative, a collaboration between Entebbe Municipal Council and Walimu Cooperative Union Limited, aims to simplify access to credit facilities for teachers.

The app allows teachers to apply for loans directly from their smartphones, eliminating the need for lengthy paper processes and travel to district offices for signatures. This is expected to significantly reduce teacher absenteeism, as educators previously had to take time off to manage loan applications manually.

“This system is crucial because it enables teachers to apply for a loan at any time from the comfort of their homes or classrooms,” stated Stephen Nabende, National Chairperson of Walimu Cooperative Union Ltd. He added that the app enhances transparency and prevents unauthorized salary deductions, as teachers manage their applications directly.

Beyond administrative improvements, the Walimu App is positioned as a vital tool against predatory lenders who often charge exorbitant interest rates. Teachers can now access affordable credit through their SACCO, enabling them to improve their financial well-being, supplement their salaries, and invest in ventures like land acquisition and construction.

Beneficiaries have lauded the app for its efficiency and accessibility. “The app will drastically reduce delays. Personally, Walimu SACCO loans have already helped me top up my salary to buy a piece of land a year ago,” shared Teddy Nakitende, a teacher at Lake Victoria School. The initiative promises to empower educators financially and mitigate exploitation.
