Iran’s football team faces a challenging path at the upcoming World Cup, entering the competition with a squad boasting considerable experience but also battling the effects of an aging core. The team’s preparation has been significantly hampered by the suspension of the Persian Gulf Pro League, where all but six of the players ply their trade. This domestic hiatus, lasting for weeks, has left coach Amir Ghalenoei with limited opportunities to fine-tune player fitness and match readiness.
Many of the key figures expected to lead Iran at the tournament are well into their thirties. Defender Shoja Khalilzadeh is 37, while Ehsan Hajsafi is 36. Veteran striker Mehdi Taremi, formerly a notable scorer in the UEFA Champions League, is now 33 and may not possess the same attacking threat as in his prime. The absence of regular strike partner Sardar Azmoun further complicates their attacking options.
Coach Ghalenoei has openly acknowledged that this World Cup will likely be the last for many senior players. He indicated that a generational shift is on the horizon for the team, with the focus moving towards the Asian Cup after the global showpiece.
Iran finds itself in a competitive group alongside New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt. Historically, the team has struggled to advance past the group stage in all six of its World Cup appearances, managing only three wins out of eighteen matches. The last two tournaments saw narrow misses for the knockout rounds despite victories over Morocco and Wales. With an expanded tournament format, the possibility of a third-place finish securing progression offers a glimmer of hope for this seasoned, yet perhaps weary, Iranian squad.
