Three in Custody Over Murder of Rugby Cranes Player Sydney Gongody

Tragedy has struck Uganda’s rugby community with the death of Sydney Gongody, a prominent player for the Rugby Cranes and Stanbic Black Pirates. Gongody, 27, was fatally injured following an alleged mob attack in Kira on Friday.
Authorities have arrested three people – two men and one woman – who are currently detained at Kira Road Police Station as the investigation unfolds. Police indicated that preliminary findings suggest Gongody was subjected to mob justice after being accused of snatching a woman’s handbag.
The exact details leading to the incident are still being actively investigated. Gongody was rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital by responding officers but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Gongody’s untimely death has cast a shadow over the sport, leading to the postponement of the crucial Uganda Rugby Premiership semi-final match between his club, Black Pirates, and rivals Heathens.
Leaders within the rugby fraternity have expressed deep sorrow. Godwin Kayangwe, president of the Uganda Rugby Union, described Gongody’s death as an immeasurable loss, highlighting his dedication, discipline, and significant contributions to both the Black Pirates and the national Rugby Cranes team.
Gongody was a key figure for the Pirates, having been part of their 2025 Premiership title-winning squad. He also recently participated with the team in the Enterprise Cup final held in Nairobi.
