Tragedy has struck in Kampala as police confirmed the discovery of the decomposing body of Lydia Babirye, a 52-year-old woman who was abducted from her home in Kigowa, Ntinda.
Babirye was kidnapped last Thursday, and her captors subsequently used her mobile phone to demand a ransom of Shs19 million from her family. A missing person’s report was filed at Old Kampala Police Station.
A joint security operation successfully tracked down and apprehended two primary suspects in connection with the kidnapping and murder. According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, one suspect led investigators to the home of an accomplice in Kiteredde Village, Kakiri Town Council, Wakiso District.
Upon arrival, security forces found Babirye’s body in a state of decomposition, concealed within the suspect’s house and wrapped in a mattress cover. Forensic experts processed the scene, and evidence indicated that the suspects had also prepared a shallow grave within the compound, likely intended for further concealment of the body.
The body has been transported to the KCCA City Mortuary for a postmortem examination. While the exact motive behind the killing is still under investigation, the suspects are currently in police custody. This incident echoes a disturbing trend of violent kidnappings for ransom targeting residents in the Kampala metropolitan area, raising concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of surveillance systems.
