Israel’s ambassador to Uganda, Gideon Behar, who is based in Nairobi, recently visited Kampala with the objective of enhancing the long-standing relationship between the two nations. Behar emphasized Uganda’s role as a significant partner to Israel since its independence and expressed a desire to see more collaborative activities.
During his visit, Ambassador Behar noted that while tangible discussions, such as direct flights between Uganda and Israel, occurred during Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit in 2020, concrete progress has been slow. He indicated his personal wish for the establishment of a Ugandan embassy in Jerusalem and an Israeli embassy in Kampala, acknowledging that such developments require further diplomatic work.
The ambassador also addressed the recent conflicts Israel has faced, clarifying that the nation was attacked by groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, rather than initiating hostilities. He detailed the existential threat posed by the Iranian regime, citing its pursuit of nuclear capabilities, ballistic missile programs, and support for regional terrorist organizations as a strategy to encircle and destroy Israel.
Behar asserted that Israel’s actions are defensive, aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, which he believes would be used against Israel given its small size. He stressed that Israel has no intention of harming the Iranian people but is focused on countering the regime’s destructive ambitions. The ambassador also refuted accusations of genocide in Gaza, stating Israel’s support for peace plans that include the disarmament of Hamas, which he accused of using civilians as human shields and committing atrocities.
“Israelis, like others, also want to live normal lives,” Behar stated, underscoring the desire for peace and security amidst regional instability. He also questioned the funding and allegiances of organizations critical of Israel’s actions, urging for a focus on Hamas’s documented violence.
