Frenkie de Jong’s presence on the field has consistently elevated the Netherlands’ performance, but a series of injuries has often kept the talismanic midfielder sidelined. Recent setbacks, including an ankle issue that ruled him out of Euro 2024 and a hamstring tear that caused him to miss the March internationals, have highlighted how much the team relies on his dynamic contributions.
At 29, de Jong has accumulated 64 caps, a tally that could have been significantly higher without these recurring physical challenges. His importance was underscored when his absence for a few Barcelona matches during their La Liga title defense sparked concern, though coach Ronald Koeman sought to reassure the public.
De Jong is the driving force in the Dutch midfield, dictating the pace and directing play from his deep-lying position. His accurate and incisive passing is instrumental in unlocking opposition defenses, adding a significant attacking threat.
Reflecting on his injury layoff, de Jong described the period as “the toughest” of his life, especially missing Euro 2024 after a significant ankle injury. He recalled a previous, less severe ankle injury during his time at Ajax, which Koeman witnessed firsthand.
Despite these hurdles, de Jong played a key role in the Netherlands’ World Cup qualification and recently set a club record for appearances for Barcelona by a Dutch player. This World Cup offers him a prime opportunity to solidify his legacy among the nation’s footballing greats.
“You have got even more desire to be there and to get the most out of it,” de Jong stated. “Since my time with the Dutch team, I think we now have the squad with the most potential. But we also need to make sure we become the best team.”
